3 Big Tips To Save Money On Local Moves

Posted on: 28 October 2019

Do you need to move across town in the near future? Are you hoping to do it as inexpensively as possible? Between utility deposits, security deposits, and so on, moving can be quite expensive. Even when you have a substantial amount of savings set aside for everything, it can quickly get eaten up by all of your moving costs. For this reason, it's a good idea to try to save money whenever and wherever possible. To get your move done swiftly and as stress-free as possible without breaking the bank, here are some tips to follow:

Rent a moving truck: Many people are afraid of using moving truck rental services because they can't drive or simply don't know how to drive a moving truck. If this sounds familiar, don't let it stop you from renting the truck. Ask friends and family if one of them will be able to drive the truck for you.

If you can't find anyone, you can often hire someone to drive the truck for less money than it would have cost to hire a full-service moving company. With this option, the driver will pick up the truck with you and drive it to your current place. You fill up the truck with your belongings and then the driver comes back a few hours later to take the truck to your new place. After everything is unloaded, you and the driver will return to the rental place to pay for the truck and for you to pay the driver.

Pay your helpers: When talking about saving money on things, it may not initially make sense to say that you should be paying the friends or relatives who help you to move. However, you're more likely to get useful and enthusiastic help if you're at least paying for a few pizzas and bottles of soda than if you say that you can't pay them anything at all. After all, a few pizzas will still cost less than hiring professional movers to take care of everything.

Ask for boxes: At some stores, the boxes that everything comes in need to be crushed and either sent back to the manufacturer or thrown away for recycling. At other stores, the employees are allowed to let people have some of these boxes. Some of these boxes may not be ideal for moving, but the boxes don't need to last forever and, if you are allowed to take them, they are free.

Banana boxes are especially good for this purpose. While there is a hole in the middle that could allow items to fall through, you can line the bottom of the box with a piece of cheap posterboard or the remains of another free box and have a very sturdy container. This type of box is good for things like clothes or books and will cost you almost nothing. With these savings and the low cost of moving truck rental services, your move can be a fraction of what you were otherwise expecting to pay.
